We approached the Infinite Interior project as an opportunity to explore the possibility of using bamboo-a traditional Asian building material that is both inexpensive and environmentally sustainable-in unexpected and innovative ways. The apartment unit is therefore treated as a laboratory for testing this material. Literally everything in the unit is made of bamboo, including most floors, ceilings, window coverings, furnishings, and most kitchen and bathroom appliances. We have also designed two new space-Piding systems, both made of bamboo: one is a folding partition that expands from a central node to create walls and corridors; the other is a curving partition that unrolls from a cylindrical column to create sinuous screens. These systems provide the apartment's residents with the flexibility to design their space according to changing needs.
